About this episode

Mr Bates vs The Post Office quickly became one of the most talked-about television dramas in years. Based on real events, it told the story of hundreds of sub-postmasters who were wrongly accused of theft and fraud due to a flawed IT system — a scandal that had been reported for years, but never fully seen.

We speak to executive producer Patrick Spence about how the series brought national attention to a long-running injustice, helped shift public and political response, and reminded audiences of the responsibility that comes with telling real people’s stories. It’s a powerful case study in how storytelling - when done with care, courage and clarity - can shape public understanding and contribute to meaningful change.
