Asia holds the world's climate future in its hands

At Temasek's Ecosperity Week 2025, one message cut through all the talk of emerging technologies and innovative financing: Asia is where the climate fight will be won or lost. The region faces exceptional vulnerability to climate disasters while grappling with rapidly growing energy demands. But here's what most discussions miss—the real battle isn't just about technology or money. It's about trust.

As Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean put it in his keynote: this is where the climate fight could be decided. But success won't come from good intentions or ambitious announcements. It hinges on something more fundamental: credible stakeholder engagement that's backed by data and focused on measurable impact.

Why credibility matters more than ambition

We live in an increasingly polarised world, with geopolitical shifts and recalibrated corporate ambitions. More than ever, we need to ensure that motivations behind the climate agenda are authentic and credible, directions are not given on a whim, and decisions are made to drive measurable outcomes for a more sustainable world.

Here's why data-backed, impact-focused engagement is becoming the cornerstone of effective climate action across Asia:

Accountability drives real action When decision-makers anchor climate conversations in evidence rather than aspiration, stakeholders can actually hold them accountable. Take corporate boards adopting new climate technology - they need to rationalise decisions based on proven efficacy, scalability, and long-term impact, not just good intentions.

Smart organisations are using sustainability reports, impact assessments, and targeted campaigns to demonstrate progress against concrete metrics. This isn't just about transparency -it's about building the trust needed to secure support for future initiatives. When stakeholders see real data showing real progress, they're more likely to back the next ambitious project.

Public support requires public understanding Progressive climate policies need more than government backing - they need citizens who understand why change is necessary. Organisations that use data-driven insights to communicate climate urgency aren't just informing stakeholders; they're building a compelling case for collective action.

The most effective corporate reports pair hard data with clear impact narratives, transforming what could be dry compliance documents into catalysts for engagement and long-term value creation. This creates shared responsibility among stakeholders, who then become advocates for the climate policies and regulations needed to drive broader change.

Investors need proof, not promises As BlackRock APAC's Susan Chan noted at the event, financing will only become more important in addressing climate change. But many investors remain cautious about green finance - and for good reason. They've seen too many projects that promised impact but delivered little.

Clear, outcome-focused messaging around sustainable projects gives investors the concrete information they need to align investment choices with ESG principles. When companies engage investors with empirical data on projected risks and returns, aligned with recognised reporting standards, they boost both credibility and comparability. This drives confidence in climate finance when it's needed most.

Collaboration requires common language In a region as diverse as Asia, effective partnerships depend on seamless stakeholder engagement. The most successful collaborations share more than vision, they share measurement frameworks, disclosure standards, and impact indicators.

Organisations adopting complementary frameworks like the SDGs, or global standards like GRI and ISSB's sustainability disclosure standards, create the common language needed for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and genuine collaboration. When partners can communicate using meaningful datasets, partnerships can scale and thrive.

The authenticity imperative We live in an increasingly polarised world where corporate motivations face intense scrutiny. More than ever, the climate agenda needs authentic, credible leadership - decisions made to drive measurable outcomes, not just positive headlines.

Data-backed, impact-focused engagement builds stakeholder trust by demonstrating tangible rationale for participation, investment, and action. This creates momentum for the all-of-society approach that Asia needs to build truly greener ecosystems.

Making every engagement count Climate action in Asia won't succeed through good intentions alone. It requires organisations that understand how every stakeholder interaction can build credibility, foster connection, and drive transformative impact. The most successful will be those who transform traditional disclosures into strategic tools that support decision-making, foster buy-in, and mobilise collective action.

The technology exists. The financing mechanisms are emerging. What's needed now is the credible stakeholder engagement that turns climate ambition into climate action.
